Well, yesterday I stayed after for GSA, and we spoke about something that had happened during the Day of Silence.
One of the members of GSA was handing out the slips of paper for those who wanted to to keep quiet during the day, and had taped on a rainbow flag on his shirt. One of the Admins later told him he could not remain quiet today and to take off the rainbow flag.
Later on, some of the GSA members spoke to the admin, and the admind explained the issue. Apparently, some of the kids who had taken the slip had been using it as a reason to not talk all day, not knowing exsactly WHY. On top of this, an e-mail had been sent to the school from a site telling parents that they should NOT send their child to school because The Day of Silence supports people being gay and that this is not something schools should support.See this page. The e-mail was from someone sending this out because of this article. Be warned, it is a seriously moron-filled site and can be made out as somewhat offensive. When one of the girls read parts of the page aloud it was nearly a chin drop to floor moment. It's THAT BAD AND MESSED UP.
So, fortunatly, there were no hard feelings within the school, as the admin was only concerned because of the issue with parents and the fact I'm pretty sure they don't want other problems to arrise because word about this website may have gotten out and such. What bugs me the most is the crap this site has filling its pages. I've gone on now and skimmed a few articles, even just the titles or first sentences, and it's insane.
Hope this is in the right section, and feel free to talk/rant/whatever about this. Also, The site has up a list of school participating/that participated in the Day of Silence, of which mine is on. (LOL, can you guess what one mine is? xDD)
my my what do we have here. just reading that first paragraph has me thinking of one phrase 'Bloody Roman Catholic Hate Propaganda!' And I have serious issues with the Church to begin with...
People have some serious issues I swear. I'm tired of hateful catholics ruining the image of other catholics. I actually happen to be agnostic but all the rest of my family is catholic and they're very open and loving.
Ohh ho ho ho..... the absurdity never seems to end. *sigh* 'Personal space' is such an interesting concept, isn't it?
Many of these articles are written to impart a sense of violation of said space and freedoms of beliefs, and further so to impart them on behalf of the readers' 'vulnerable children' to inspire reactions derived from the strong family ties that the reader is assumed to value highly.
7.__Teachers/staff who are openly homosexual Not positive role models for students. Close student-teacher relationships are a high risk.
8._ Involvement in your school of radical pro-homosexual groups like GLSEN, PFLAG, ACLU, Lambda Legal Defense Fund These groups are well-funded and looking for fights. Any objectors will be subject to public disgrace.
9._Celebrating "Day of Silence," gay pride" month or "coming out" day There is nothing to celebrate about encouraging kids to adopt dangerous sexual practices.
10._Exhibits/DVDs/programs on families headed by homosexuals Tries to put a conventional face on problem behavior.
11._ Students & parents with concerns being silenced Intimidation goes hand-in-hand with the expressed goal of "ending homophobia."
12._ Teacher in-service meetings promoting diversity and complaining about "homophobia" Often required now by school systems, these programs foster attitudes of hostility toward tradition-minded parents, who are portrayed as trouble-makers.
I can understand their thought processes but...it feels surprisingly similar to politely-written wartime propaganda...rather than dehumanization it's demonization or just the slight push from 'those people are different from us' to 'those people are less important than us.' It feels ...cold.

Post script: As I said, I can understand where they are coming from. But that doesn't mean that I can't tell the difference between looking out for one's self and rabidly attacking anyone who doesn't fit in their little box of what they say that people can be. The vitrol of people blatantly out for blood makes my own blood boil. re: http://www.missionamerica.com/agenda.php?articlenum=69:
"Yet the enormity of the disaster of legalizing gay marriage in that state cannot be overstated. For one thing, it has given tremendous credibility to the homosexual rights movement, especially in what is taught to kids in schools. Lawlessness abounds and everyone is doing what is right in his or her own mind."
My favorite part of that was this:
"But facts seldom get in the way of the virulent climate opposing orthodox Christian faith, heavily driven, again, by gay rights. The misinformation and outright bigotry against conservatives and Christians is especially intense in high schools and colleges. How has it gotten this far? Why arent parents objecting?"
It sounds....eerily familiar. Doesn't it?

The same thing happened to me on MY day of silence!
I got in trouble because I wouldn't take the tape off my mouth, so the Vice Principle sent me down to the office and told me to wait there for her. I waited for an hour and she never showed, soI just upped and left. Lots of other kids participating had the same thing happen to them. I think they just wanted us out of the way so no one could see us.
How flippin retarded is that??? They aren't allowed to do that in a Public School!

Well, they CAN do it even in public schools. If they got the e-mail/letter that my school got, it may have been a precaution so that parents didn't come flying in and telling them off for supporting homsexuals. Trust me, parents probably would have. Especially those that are "OMG MY KID IS THE BEST SHIIZ IN THE WORLD. HE/SHE POOPS RAINBOWS." =___= What sucks is that those parents are the only one who really cause a problem with the school, and yeah. Not fun. Mom's had to deal with it and the teachers she knows via subbing in the school don't like those parents either.
However, sending a kid down to the office and not showing up is extremely stupid. xP Most of my teachers themselves were supportive and didn't mind. Though I personally got slightly annoyed when my physics teacher decided that me and my friends doing it shouldn't answer question. Since we're SUPPOSED TO be bringing some form of attention to this. =___=;;; However, I did get away with answering one question in the class, since I was the only one who knew it. Wrote it in my notebook and pointed to it and the teacher came over. (Fortunatly I sit in the very front xP) Though when there was no need to talk in the class, even for those who weren't doing it, that's understandable. xP
We didn't face any problems like that at my school, sure there was bullying and sure people were just doing it so they wouldn't need to participate in class, but thats about it. Our school didn't receive an e-mail, but a contact informed us of the site a few days before our DOS, in case any parents gave us problems.
When I read that website's articles, I was tempted to take a hunting lesson and get a gun licence to shoot my computer screen. I mean, I'm all for people having different opinions, but that's just insane. I'm tempted to Email them and tell them off, but I'm afraid I may get sued.

It would be pointless in any case: the extreme ones cannot be reached by anything resembling reason, and as you say tend to react with irrational hostility to anyone who challenges their views.
Some of the less extreme bigots are capable of not merely tolerating, but even becoming friends with, someone who embodies their prejudices, once they get to know that person; but this seldom seems to affect their prejudice against those they don't know.

GAH! I started to read a little on the page and those related to it and GAH, these people should be sterilized so they are not able to to have kids they can fill the heads of with all this "sound" and "healthy" shit. I would rather shoot them myself, but I don't believe in such violence, and it would also just make things worse D:
