Books that The Golden Compass movie were based on?

I read them in elementary... was thinking about reading them again recently, because I don't remember much about them. I just remember that I read them out of order on accident, and that they were the awesomest books ( and my first ever favorite books )

They age really well...I think it has to do with all the religious subtext.

golden compas books where great although i read em quite long ago
i havent seen the movie but i heard it wasnt really good.

I've heard the books are good (good reviews in Locus if I remember correctly), and have been keeping an eye out for them in secondhand bookstores (essentially the only place I buy books now: after all, 2 or 3 times as many books for the money...), but have not obtained them yet.  Someday...
