Recommendations?

A place to post your reccomendations for books to read, that you think people probably haven't heard of.

First off-

- The Monster Blood Tattoo books. They're a lot of fun.

- The Percy Jackson series.

I'd recommend my favourite series, the Wheel of Time, but they're not for everyone. They're kinda really long and descriptive, with little action.

One of my favorite book series is the Black Jewels Trillogy by Anne Bishop. Fantasy core drenched in drama, and black, grey, and white morality.
It's NC-17 and has gore and sexual content, but doesn't ever descend into porn or gorn. It seems to at peak have sex in it because the characters in it have sex, if that makes sense, which has sort of shaped my own characters and writing, as well as how I view literary sex in general, so it's a rather formative book for me!

As a transgirl, reading Julia Serano's Whipping Girl was quite the adventure, and I gained someone to admire! It's very sharply written in both the cerebral and critical senses.

I've been seriously recommended Stranger in a Strange Land (by Robert Heinlein) by my friend, but I haven't touched it yet.

Ah, the Black Jewels Trilogy. I remember it fondly.

Recommended by me, too.

Nah, couldn't be.

(This forum needs a sarcasm button.)

I just couldn't thik of a good response to that, so I went with the first thing I could think of.

{Although I kinda wanna learn how to play :P }

I'm trying to stave off the can't think of good response thing too so maybe we're just low on steam/coal (I'm aware they're linked powers)/3l3ctr!c!ty/et cetera.

(I wonder if I could make a variation that ends in some sort of 'draw' so NEITHER player wins, just because I'm spiteful like that)

We should totally figure out the rules, make the game, then force people to play it.

Ingenious!

But since it's /cradle/, I get the feeling that just by making the rules we've made variations instead of the actual game...

True.

Screw the rules, then! We'll just make the game, then force people to play without telling them there are no rules! They'll be left wondering if what they're about to do is even legal by the game...

That sounds like a really really fun game. I'd play it. I'd play it with you! *additional vaguely flirtful comment oh god I'm so tired*

We could play two-against-two! We'd crush anyone who dared play against us!

Then along comes someone else who's read the book, and crushes us in turn.

Dammit, must I lose even in my imagine spots?

{Also, if you're tired, you should go to bed. We want you awake and alert

I wouldn't mind losing to someone who's also read it but I sure wouldn't make it easy!

"Dammit, must I lose even in my imagine spots?"

That reminds me of how somehow, one sleepless night, my thoughts went from magic cards, to [something in the middle] to the chinese action movie Hero (Jet Li), which features one duel where both combatants fight out the battle in their minds first, which made me think "Only fools win every battle inside their head," which made me think of an upcoming magic tournament and made me realize "Oh crud, I'll probably lose."

(But if I go to sleep I can't post on the forums anymore...)

I want to know what that step in the middle was.

Also, are you talking about Magic: the Gathering, or a different Magic? Because I played a Gathering tournament once.

I lost in the second round.

Dammit.

Y'know, I really want to know too. It's the thing I still can't grasp from that train of thought and I'm usually pretty good about tracking those.

Yes, MTG. Your tournament was elimination? The ones I go to are usually 'fight in each round, points are tallied up in the end'. At the one in question, I was taking a sort of personalized type of deck, and only won the first of four rounds--lost all my other games :(

If you want to get into/learn again, I can play over text!

Yeah, my tournament was elimination. I prefer them.

I had my personalized deck with me. I had my awesome little black slug crawler-type creature out- he's like a 6/6 swampwalker, or something ridiculous like that- in the first game, nd I annihilated my opponent. In the second round, I just kept drawing islands and swamps. I didn't get a single creature out 'til the fifth round!

How would you play over text?

Um, it mostly has a lot to do with instant messages like AIM or IRC, and trusting the opp not to cheat, but since I mostly play just friends this way it's no problem. The one I brought was based around http://magiccards.info/zen/en/143.html and these with these as ammunition. The normal Ascension deck doesn't bother with land destruction, but it's my own personalized creation.

Nice.

Mine's mainly a blue/black deck, with rgues, faeries and merfolk.

I rely on swampwalk and islandwalk if facing against a similar opponent. Otherwise, I rely on cards like Protective Bubble (An enchant card that makes the target unblockable, and gives them shroud) and cards like Notorious Throng.

I like Whispersilk Cloak, it costs a little more (it's an equipment artifact granting unblockable and shroud, (3) to drop and (2) to equip), but goes a little farther in case of instants or swapping creatures to attack with!

Tsk tsk.

I play Protective Bubble and Notorious Throng together. I can usually deal 8 damage in a turn by sacrificing spell cards and such; at least some of that is by a rogue. Then I play NT for its' prowl cost, and get 8 1/1 black Faerie Rogue tokens with flying into play- Plus, I take an extra turn!

Dear god that's a lovely card I've never seen before. I have a monoblue fae deck that doesn't focus much in the way of rogues though.

I love these cards so hard.

I'll see if I can find what deck it's from. Then you can sit down and start drooling at the awesomeness of my cards.

I recently started a series called: "prince of nothing" Ihad 3 books of the series just standing on a shelve, so a couple of days ago i just picked it up and started..... seems like it could be pretty good, i have only read two chapters so far but it starts out quite interesting. =)

I recently read a book called 'I am Number 4' or something.

It was terrible. The main character was a Mary Sue- he could trash a dozen humans with ease, he ws absurdly handsome, he had latent 'gifts' that just happened to be things like telekinesis and invisibility-, his girlfriend was a Mary Sue (everybody wanted her. Literally everyone), the plot was cliched and unoriginal, nd the book just plain sucked.

Two thumbs down.

I read 'Forfedrene' (The Ancestors) by Yngve Frøyen some time back, it is a teen book of plain awsomeness =D
....I'm not sure if it's translated into any languages (it's in Norwegian), but if you happen to stumble across it (and just mysteriously learn Norwegian in a poof), you should definitely read it =)
