Subbed or Dubbed?

I know this is a really stupid question, but hey, here goes.

What kind of anime do you like watching more, subbed or dubbed? And why.

I like Subbed better because I'm more of a visual person and I can get everything they say visually. If I watch something in english, I always miss what they're saying, oddly enough. lol That, and when they translate it, they change everything and make everyone "cousins". hahaha (Sailor Moon reference, btw).

cant there be both? i like the spoken words to be in english and then have the subtitles be in japanese. that way i can read whats really meant to be said.

Depends, it really does. If they do a decent job of dubbing, then I don't mind. Like Chobits and Strawberry Eggs were excellent dubs. When it comes to horrible jobs like Sailor Moon, I prefer subbing.

Depends again. If it's edited for TV then they do, if it's not then they don't. It also depends on who's the one dubbing it. If it's 4Kids, you can expect it to be mutilated beyond recognition. You should watch One Piece on TV one time. Holy crap!

well, when you'll be happy to know that the rights to one piece are no longer going to be with one piece. if i remember right, they're going to funimation or some company thats proven itself to be good with dubbing and will hire a whole new cast.

i think that most of the bad dubs are from the era before anime got popular, E.I. sailor moon, early dbz and such, then theres companies that dont have the money to schedule tons of studio time and cant be picky with how a line gets said...and also animes that're aimed for kids in america will usually get much bubblier and annoying voices and also tryin to kid it down with catch phrases and massive edits..."believe it"

Believe it. *sudders*

I wasn't much of a fan of Naruto before it was dubbed. I don't think that any anime, regardless of how hyped, lame and predictable it is, deserves such atrocities.

i just take comfort in knowing that the voice of naruto is done by a 40 year old, 4'9ish, 270lb large woman thats going bald.

You can't have lesbians in a cartoon! They'll demoralize our youth! Blah, blah, blah! God this, God that. I use God as an excuse to explain my own predujice and hate, even though God has never been a source of hate.

Nothing annoys me more than hateful Christians. Make the rest of us look bad.

Actually, in my opinion, making them cousins made it worse. Now they're not only lesbians, but incestrial lesbain cousins. >_>

Even my mom knew that Michiru and Haruka weren't "cousins" back when the dub was on TV  She came in when a "private" moment was happening and was like "Are they together". Awkward moments.

I definitely prefer subbed over dubbed.  It's all a matter of preference and whether or not you start with subs or dubs first.  If you watch a subbed anime then try to watch it in dubbed, you're used to the first character voices so it's going to seem completely unnatural.  Again it also includes the quality and experience of a voice actor as well.

Japanese VA's also use much more emotion in their characters, while American one's are pretty much just doing a job.  They also have to change the script so that some words do sound unnatural.

There's a reason for that. Japanese seiyuu have to go through a very difficult process of elimination. It's a very competitive field in Japan. You have to be great to even be considered, and even then you may not get the job.

In America, they're far less picky. There's less competition and less actors willing to do voice-over work. Also, not all actors make good voice actors. This is something that studios still seem not to have learned.

Taking into consideration, Voice Acting in Japan is pretty much the equivalent to acting in America minus the scandals. Japan is a competitive place in general for just about anything with so many people and limited resources. It must be very stressful living there in consideration to North America.

I really hope that studios do realize soon enough that not all people are able to do voice acting and make it sound believable to an audience. Eliminate all that are terrible! Leave only the good ones to do all the work and maybe pay them more money!

Mena Suvari is a horrible voice actress. If you've heard her performance in Kingdom Hearts II as Aertih, you'll know what I'm talking about. She has the deadest voice EVER.

I REALLY hate dubbed anime.

I often can't stand the voice in english (Or french. That's even MORE horrible) and I prefer having the original voice, it really can change the Idea you have of a character~

I would like to say subbed in english, if you are in sweden and watch anime at the TV you will almost puke or something -.-'' We got several animes that they have dubbed but we don't have so many voice actors so if there are to many characters in a anime two of them might have the same voice x_x

Yes I am. It was a double dubbed version of Dragon Ball Z. Needless to say, I had nightmares about dubbing after that experience.

Because it went from the original to Dutch. Then the Dutch decided they would try to dub an English version of it.

oh my goodness, a really bad dubbed anime is Battle Athletes Victory. Since the characters were from different countries, the english voices gave them weird ass accents. I wanted to kick the "chinese" chick every time she talked. It sounded so stereotyped. T_T

God, I hate dubbed anime. Not only does it take away from the anime's cultural experience and its comical gags/jokes, but the majority of English dubbs do a horrible job compared to the origional Japanese voice over. And if that isn't enough, usually the English dubbers change the origional script (as do their subtitles). I'd like to stick to Fansubs.

Well technically they have to change the script slightly so that the english pronounciation will match with the japanese versions lip syncing. But! I hate it when they change stuff on purpose to change the story line. Or when they change jokes because of the culture difference because appearently we won't understand them. >_>

The Ichigo Mashimaro(Strawberry Marshmallow) english dub is completely messed up. Ana being from England but not being able to speak good english.. although she's talking english in the dub. Makes a lot of sense.

Well yeah the poor souls that never watch the original versions of anime wouldn't probably understand them jokes. I definitely agree that they shouldn't change the storyline on the show though.

Meh I gave up on dubs years ago.

I only watch dubs if I have to. Like, if there's absolutely no way I can get the japanese version.

If there's absolutely no way for me to get the Japanese version of an anime, I don't watch the anime.

Hahaha. Well, I won't go that far, unless the dub is just THAT bad.

As long as you don't try to watch any anime dubbed by 4Kids, you should be okay.

Someone said French dub was horrible. That's true people. You think american ones are bad? You don't know what we have to endure. The japanese version is always the best. I can't stand any dub now (even spanish, which i find very funny XD ). Voice actors in Japan rocks, i hope they'll keep up that good :)

My brother always chooses subbed over dubbed mainly because japanese voices match better with the persons mouth movements.
Why settle for things that seem out of place and leave out information?

i like subbed, because with some shows(naruto, one piece) the american voice acting is tarrible. my one exception is Trigun(Bleach maybe because it has the guy that does Vash's voice).

If at all possible, I watch my anime raw or subbed. Dub work is slowly improving, but it still has a long way to go. I mean... when I saw what they did to Card Captor Sakura, I literally threw up... a part of my soul died that day. ;.;

I enjoy both subbed and dubbed, but when it comes to things like Sailor Moon and Digimon/Pokemon I prefer subbed over dubbed.

Not that I still watch Pokemon. *Cough*
