Seme Vs Uke

I had no idea what these words meant for the longest time. xD I only saw the word "uke" a lot and finally asked someone what it was.

Seme : Domanant (lol on top!)
Uke : Submissive (hahaha on bottom?)

I don't really want to get into more graphic terms... *cough* >__>;

Anyways, discussion!
Why is this such a popular theme in boy love stories?
I personally don't really like yaoi stuff because it mostly consists of rape type situations or one of the guys resisting the entire time. D:
And I guess which you like better? xD Semes or ukes?

I'm sorry if I sound stupid talking about this or something, I don't know much about it. xD

Technically this can be applied to shoujo-ai & yuri as well I believe so I'll go based on that

I think for example that me and sofia are both pretty uke most of the time

of course this goes under the theory your definition is that seme is a dominant partner in a relationship (Maculine) and Uke is less dominant (Feminine)

I don't know for sure but that was always my impression

I've never really seen it applied to shoujo ai before though. Well one of my friends does but like, I see it WAY more often in shonen ai/yaoi references. Mostly SasuNaru stuff I see all over the place on Deviant Art.

Here's a quiz I found about uke/seme ness

http://www.quizilla.com/quizzes/5671854/how-seme-uke-are-you

I got...

20% Seme - You've got some back bone. Not much, and if you attempt to expose it, the likelihood is, You'll have your back boned. You constantly try to attract your seme's attention, and mess up. But, Lucky for you, you look cute doing it.
Most Compatible with - 80%

Wait, what?? only 20%??? Darn

Usually relationships end up with one dominant person and one submissive person

the whole seme/uke thing just exaggerates it quite a bit

as for me, I'm a seme

and according to the quiz Kio showed us

100% Seme - You rule your uke with an iron fist. You treat him like property and need to loosen up. He accepts you but you can't control him forever.
Most Compatible with - 0%

Muahahaha

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Seme says it can be applied to both shounen- and shoujo-ai, but is most often used to refer to the dominant partner in the former.

I don't think Seme necessitates masculinity or Uke femininity, though. Rather than directly related, they seem to me more...uhm...common corresponding traits, that's it.

EDIT: Took that quiz'n I got:
20% Seme - You've got some back bone. Not much, and if you attempt to expose it, the likelihood is, You'll have your back boned. You constantly try to attract your seme's attention, and mess up. But, Lucky for you, you look cute doing it.
Most Compatible with - 80%, too. 'Parently that's 25% of the results the questionare's given (cool feature, actually).

Sidenote: It occurs to me that seme vs uke doesn't necessarily mean 'on top' or 'on bottom', *cough*.
